Concrete in a Growing Byron Township
Byron Center is an unincorporated community in Byron Township, south of Wyoming in Kent County, and it has grown fast enough that concrete contractors here pour a lot of first patios and driveway extensions on fairly new homes. The census-designated place had 3,777 residents in 2000, 5,822 in 2010 and 7,431 in 2020, almost twice as many in twenty years. The 2020 census counted 2,652 housing units across about 5 square miles. Because Byron Center has no separate local government, permits and road rules come from Byron Township and the Kent County Road Commission.
New homes, small builder slabs
Many houses built here since 2000 came with a basic driveway and a small rear slab or no patio at all. Common upgrades we pour:
- A larger patio, broom finish or stamped, sized for a table, grill and seating
- A walk from the driveway to the back yard
- A side pad for a trailer, boat or extra car
- Steps and a landing at the back door where a builder left a short drop
- A shed or hot tub slab
On newer lots the soil around the house is often backfill that was placed during construction and may still be settling. We dig through loose fill to firm ground and compact a gravel base, so a new patio does not sink next to the foundation.
Older homes and farm ground
Byron Township is old. It was the parent of Wyoming Township, which split from it on April 3, 1848, and Byron Center still has older homes near the center of the community. Those houses tend to need replacement work: cracked drives, worn steps and garage floors. Around the edges of the township there are still farms and larger lots, where we pour pole barn floors and equipment pads sized for the load.
High ground and drainage
Byron Center sits at about 745 feet, higher than Grand Rapids and the river towns, and much of the land is gently rolling. That helps drainage in general, but on any lot the details matter. A patio needs a steady fall away from the house, a driveway needs to shed water to the street or side yard, and downspouts should not empty onto a slab where water will freeze. We sort all of that out before we set forms.
Built for the snow belt
The Grand Rapids area averages about 75 inches of snow and roughly 138 nights below freezing each year. We use air-entrained concrete for all exterior work, place control joints where cracks would naturally form and recommend sealing after the concrete has cured.
Matching a new patio to the house
On newer Byron Center homes, we often match a stamped patio's color to the siding, stone veneer or roof. A two-tone design, with a stamped field and a smooth or contrasting border, keeps the patio from looking busy. Bring photos of styles you like, and we will show you samples on site at the estimate so you can see the colors in daylight.
Byron Center Public Schools runs four elementary schools, Nickels Intermediate, West Middle School and Byron Center High School, and the community's 49315 post office serves several surrounding townships, so our Byron Center visits often take us into those neighboring townships too. Byron Center Questions
Why did my builder patio sink next to the house?
Soil next to a new foundation is backfill, and it keeps settling for years. Patios poured on that fill without enough compaction or gravel base tend to drop near the wall.
Who handles permits in Byron Center?
Byron Center is part of Byron Township, so building questions go to the township. We confirm what your project needs before we schedule.
Can you add a trailer pad beside my driveway?
Yes. We size the thickness and base for the trailer or boat and tie it neatly into the existing drive.
What time of year works for pouring a patio?
Late spring through early fall gives the most reliable curing weather in West Michigan. We can pour in cooler months with blankets and the right mix, but most owners plan patios for the warmer season.
