Concrete Projects in the Village of Sparta
Sparta is a village in northern Kent County, and most of the work concrete contractors do in Sparta is on established homes in the village and on rural lots in the township around it. The area was first settled in 1844, and Sparta Township was organized in 1846. Jonathan Nash, the first settler in the village area, called the place Nashville. It was platted in 1867 and incorporated in 1883. The 2020 census counted 4,244 residents and 1,819 housing units in about 2.6 square miles.
A steady, older village
Sparta's population has grown slowly and steadily: 2,327 in 1950, 3,094 in 1970, 3,968 in 1990 and 4,244 in 2020. That means a large share of the village's houses are decades old, and much of the concrete around them is original or patched. We regularly replace:
- Driveways that have cracked into pieces or sunk at the garage
- Front walks with raised or broken panels
- Steps and stoops that have tipped away from the door
- Floors in older detached garages
On these homes we work carefully around old foundations and mature landscaping, and we match finishes so the new concrete fits the house.
High ground and the Rogue River
The village sits at about 797 feet, and the Rogue River flows through its eastern part. M-37 runs along the western edge. Higher ground generally drains well, but lots near the river and in low corners can stay wet into spring. Water under a slab freezes and lifts it, then lets it drop when it thaws. A compacted gravel base and a steady slope away from the house are what stop that cycle from breaking up a new driveway or patio.
Village history
During World War II, Sparta had a camp for German prisoners of war, who worked as farmhands in the area. In the 1960s the village was home to Fenton Records, an independent label and recording studio whose 45s are now collectible. Those stories are part of why many Sparta homeowners care about keeping the village's older look. A plain broom finish with tooled edges suits most older houses, and a stamped patio in the back yard adds style without changing the front of the house.
Township and rural work
Outside the village, Sparta Township is largely rural. Calls from the township often involve long driveways, pole barn floors, equipment pads and slabs for detached garages and shops. We size these for the loads they will carry and build the base deeper where trucks and equipment will park.
Sizing the job honestly
Not every old slab needs to go. If a Sparta driveway has one bad panel by the garage and the rest is level and sound, we will say so and quote that section. If the cracks run across most of the slab, or water is getting underneath, we explain why replacement is the better spend. Either way, you get the reasoning in writing.
Snow and cold
Northern Kent County sees the same lake-effect storms as the rest of the metro, and Grand Rapids averages about 75 inches of snow a year. Air-entrained concrete, good curing and a sealer after the slab cures give outdoor concrete a long service life. Call (616) 727-8573 to set up a visit. Sparta Questions
Do you work outside the village limits?
Yes. We pour driveways, barn floors and patios throughout Sparta Township as well as in the village.
Can you replace my front walk without tearing up the lawn?
We keep disturbance to a strip along the walk for forming and backfill, then restore the edges with topsoil so grass can grow back.
My old garage floor is cracked and uneven. Can it be replaced?
Yes. We break out the old floor, rebuild the base and pour a new slab inside the garage, sloped toward the door so water drains out.
How long before I can drive on a new driveway?
Usually about a week, depending on temperature. Foot traffic is fine sooner. We give you specific timing after the pour.
