Patterned Concrete for Patios, Entries and Borders
Stamped concrete is regular poured concrete that is colored and pressed with textured mats while it is still soft, so it looks like slate, fieldstone, cobblestone or brick. Around Grand Rapids, homeowners use it most for backyard patios, front entries, walks and borders along a plain driveway. Because it is one continuous slab, it has no joints between pieces for weeds to grow through, and nothing to shift the way loose pavers can. HomeGuide's patio guide lists stamped concrete at $9 to $30 per square foot installed, compared with $4 to $12 for plain concrete.
Where stamped concrete works well, and where it does not
It is a good fit for patios, pool surrounds, front walks, entry landings and decorative borders. These areas get foot traffic and are seen up close, which is where pattern and color matter most.
It is a weaker fit for the main lanes of a driveway in a snowy city. Deep textures catch snow, are harder to shovel cleanly, and plow blades can scuff the color. A common compromise is a stamped border or apron detail with plain broom-finished concrete where the tires run. HomeGuide's driveway guide lists stamped driveways at $8 to $26 per square foot.
Stamped surfaces can also be more slippery than broom-finished concrete when wet or icy, especially after sealing. Choosing a pattern with real texture and adding a slip-resistant additive to the sealer helps on steps and slopes.
Patterns and color
- Ashlar slate: rectangular stones in mixed sizes, one of the most popular patio patterns.
- Random stone or flagstone: irregular shapes that look like natural stone.
- Cobblestone and brick: good for borders, walks and entries, especially near older brick homes.
- Wood plank: a board pattern for areas that would otherwise be a deck.
Color is usually done in two layers: a base color mixed into the concrete or spread on the surface, and a release agent in a second color that settles into the texture to create depth. We bring samples to the estimate so you can see them next to your house and roof.
Built the same way underneath
Stamping only changes the top. The slab still needs the same crushed-stone base, slope, thickness, air-entrained mix and control joints as any other outdoor slab. Joints are placed along pattern lines where possible so they blend in. Because stamping has to happen in a short window while the concrete is setting, crew size and timing on pour day matter more than on a plain slab, and very hot or windy days can shorten that window.
Already have plain concrete?
If an existing patio or walk is structurally sound, a stamped overlay can give it a new look without tearing it out. HomeGuide's resurfacing guide lists stamped overlays at about $7 to $15 per square foot for a single pattern and up to about $20 for more complex designs. An overlay will not fix a slab that is cracked through, sinking or scaling deeply; those need repair or replacement first.
Sealing and upkeep
Sealer protects the color and the surface from water and salt. HomeGuide lists sealing at $1 to $3 per square foot and recommends resealing every 2 to 3 years. Do not use rock salt on stamped concrete; use sand for traction. Shovel with a plastic blade rather than metal. If the sealer starts to look dull or water stops beading on it, it is time for a fresh coat.

Stamped Concrete Questions
Is stamped concrete a good idea in Michigan?
It works well for patios, walks and entries if it is built on a good base with air-entrained concrete and kept sealed. It is less practical for the main lanes of a driveway, where plows and shovels wear the surface. Skipping rock salt and resealing every 2 to 3 years make the biggest difference.
How much more does stamped concrete cost than plain?
HomeGuide's patio guide lists plain concrete at $4 to $12 per square foot and stamped at $9 to $30. For a 16 by 16 foot patio that is roughly $1,000 to $3,100 plain versus $2,000 to $7,700 stamped or stained.
Is stamped concrete slippery?
It can be when wet or icy, especially with a glossy sealer. We recommend textured patterns and a slip-resistant additive in the sealer for steps, slopes and pool areas.
Can you stamp my existing patio?
If the slab is sound, a stamped overlay is possible; HomeGuide lists it at about $7 to $15 per square foot for a single pattern. Slabs that are cracked through, sinking or deeply scaled need repair or replacement first.
