Concrete Work in Cedar Springs

Cedar Springs is a small city at the north end of Kent County, about 20 miles from Grand Rapids, and concrete contractors here mostly replace aging concrete on older in-town homes and pour new slabs on country lots nearby. The city takes its name from the cedar trees and springs once found in the area. It had 3,627 residents and 1,358 housing units at the 2020 census, on just under 2 square miles of land.

From a post office to a city

Robin Hicks is said to have settled the area as early as 1855. The first post office opened on February 4, 1857, with Nicholas Hill as postmaster, and the village was platted in 1859. Cedar Springs incorporated as a village in 1871 and became a city in 1959. Population stayed under 2,000 until the 1970s, then grew to 2,615 by 1980 and 3,627 by 2020.

That history leaves the city with an older core, where homes have narrow drives, porches, front steps and walks laid long ago, surrounded by newer streets from the 1970s onward.

Springs and wet ground

A place named for its springs is a reminder to check for water. Lots with a high water table or seasonal wet spots need a deeper, well-drained gravel base under any slab, and sometimes a drain along the low edge. Without that, frost lifts the concrete each winter and it cracks as it settles back down. Cedar Springs also sits high, at about 860 feet, so many lots drain well. We check your lot before we decide how deep to dig.

Typical Cedar Springs jobs

  • Replacing cracked and sunken driveways on older homes
  • New driveways and aprons on homes that still have gravel drives
  • Patios behind newer homes, broom-finish or stamped
  • Front walks, stoops and porch steps with even risers
  • Garage floors and shed pads
  • Pole barn and shop floors on rural lots outside town

We put every part of the scope in writing, including base depth, slab thickness, finish and joint layout.

Far-north winters

Cedar Springs gets the heavy lake-effect winters common to West Michigan; Grand Rapids, to the south, averages about 75 inches of snow a year. Driveways here are shoveled, blown and plowed all winter. We use air-entrained concrete for every exterior slab, cure it properly and recommend a penetrating sealer to slow salt damage. If you park near the street, we can thicken the apron where the plow hits hardest.

Small lots in the old core

The original village blocks have small lots set close together, often with a detached garage behind the house. Replacing a drive there means working around neighboring drives, fences and trees. We measure property lines, protect what is next door and plan where the truck can reach, so the work goes smoothly on pour day.

Cedar Springs Questions

Can you replace a gravel driveway with concrete?

Yes. We remove loose surface gravel, reshape and compact the base, add fresh crushed gravel where needed and pour the new drive with proper slope.

My lot has a wet spot. Can a patio still go there?

Often, yes, with a deeper gravel base and sometimes a drain at the low edge. We look at the spot before recommending a plan.

Do you serve rural properties around Cedar Springs?

Yes. We pour pole barn floors, shop slabs and long drives in the surrounding townships.

What finish suits front steps?

A broom finish grips well in snow and rain. We keep risers even and pitch the landing slightly so water runs off.

Can you pour concrete late in the fall?

Yes, within limits. Once nights drop near freezing we use blankets and a suitable mix, or we schedule the pour for spring so the slab cures in better weather.
